PERFORMANCE STREET ROYALTY

Concept: Doran George (London), Dancer/ performer: Bret Parker (San Francisco)
STREET ROYALTY is a live performance and monumental artwork by Doran George specially commissioned by The Netherlands Transgender Film Festival. The name “Street Royalty” refers to the slang “Street Queen” which academic Susan Stryker cited as an important historical root of contemporary transgender culture. In this work George will collaborate with San Francisco based dancer/performer Bret Parker to create a temporary sculptural form using Parker’s body. The sculpture will offer a point of contemplation for the experiences of vulnerability and acts of strength that are integral to the lives of transgender people.

Doran George works with hybrid situated practice including live work, installation and writing. George’s works have been presented in London, Bristol, Amsterdam, Vienna and Kupio (Finland), received commissions from organisations like De Trut, Arts Council of England, Arts Council of Finland, Arnolfini for performances and works like Peggy Pissface and the commercial break 1996, Hetero Hell (1997), trans-thought impossibl for the Transgender festival, London (1998), My body is my document Arnolfini, Bristol (1999) , Remnants of the original, London (2001), Body Freight with Johanna Tuukkanen, Finland (2001) and others.
