SNEAK PREVIEW HOLLY WOODLAWN DOC
Barry Shils, VS 2003, documentary, 20 min, video, in English without subtitles
Shils has now turned his documentary eye onto one of the worlds most famous drag queens alive. Holly Woodlawn inspired Lou Reed¹s song "Walk on the Wild Side" and is the performer through whom Andy Warhol immortalised the image of the drag queen, appearing in his films Trash (1970) and Women in Revolt (1972). Now approaching 60, living with a disability but as rambunctious as ever, Holly lives in Hollywood and is trying to get her autobiography, A Low Life in High Heels (1991) made into a film. The book tells the story of a life that contributed to a movement that changed the face of art across the world. Shils' documentary project is an important look at the life and community that were influenced by this ground breaking Warhol era.
TRASH
Paul Morrissey, USA, 1970, feature, 103, 35 mm, in English without subtitles.
Cult classic movie filled with sex, dope and garbage. Starring drag queen Holly Woodlawn and Joe Dallesandro as an impotent junky.
Morrisseys second feature film, the classic Trash (1970), really put him on the map, garnering positive reviews from most quarters for its pitiless portrayal of a particular segment of New York street life, filmed with humor and heart. In spite of Warhol's imprimatur above the title (Andy Warhol Presents Trash), it's Morrissey's movie all the way. (The Warhol-Morrissey collaboration is mostly a myth; Warhol had nothing to do with these films.) Holly Woodlawn and Joe Dallesandro play a welfare couple she a trash collector, he a heroin-addicted hustler who can barely get it up trying to survive in an indifferent world.
Barry Shils and Holly Woodlawn will be present at the screening for Q&A.
