Global Gender Expressions

MY FRIEND SU

Neeraj Bhasin, India 2001, 55 min, documentary, digital video, in Hindi with English subtitles
What is it like to feel you’re a woman trapped in a male body? Bombay city life and Indian music reflect the protagonist’s innermosts thoughts on his gender identity.

My Friend Su is a documentary about a man, his thoughts and trauma: he feels that he is a woman trapped in a male body. He feels that he does not exist, and somebody else is inside him while he just watches his own life. Neerah Bhasin’s film is a contemporary and urban reflection on the male-female binary and its inability to include those who feel they don’t correspond to its conventions.
The film has got a definite Indian feel: night time shots of urban streets, coffee-shops, warm-lit interiors in Bombay and constant background music that either reflects the city’s bustle or the protagonist’s innermost feelings.
