Cruel and Unusual
Ticket to panel discussion gives free admission to this screeningCruel and Unusual is an unflinching documentary on the lives of transgender women in men's prisons. As a catalogue of the overwhelming evidence of transwomen being denied medical and psychological treatment, suffering as victims of rape and violence, the documentary Cruel and Unusual indicts the prison system as guilty of breaking American law by inflicting 'cruel and unusual punishment'. Prisons decide where to place inmates based on their genitalia, not their gender identity. Their portraits also investigate the complex social situation that may have led them to commit criminal acts. But the film refuses to make its subjects victims.
